Is your compostable packaging sitting in general waste?

Compostable packaging is made from plant-based, recycled materials that can transform into nutrient-rich compost when properly processed. This packaging presents an environmentally friendly alternative to single-use plastic. Allowing compostable packaging to enter the general waste system can result in missed opportunities to recapture valuable materials, which is why it needs to be segregated and collected separately.

Reduce your environmental impact with compostable recycling

At Grundon, we collect your compostable items and send them for processing with our composting partner, Envar. We accept compostable waste such as:

  • Compostable packaging certified to BS EN 13432, BS EN 14995 and ASTM D6400
  • Biodegradable Polymers
  • Bags
  • Packaging
  • Tableware
  • Vegware
  • Coffee grounds

We provide dedicated containers to help you get started. Compostable recycling is also part of our RecyclePlus scheme, a combined collection service for difficult to recycle items, such as paper towels and paper cups.

Close the loop

By recycling your compostables, your waste is converted into valuable resources like quality soil improver, woodland mulch & biomass, helping to improve soil health

Monthly reporting

We provide data so you can see the environmental and financial benefits of recycling your compostables

Combined collections

Our RecyclePlus scheme includes paper towel recycling, alongside other specialised waste like compostables and , all collected in a single electric-powered vehicle for convenient, cost-effective recycling

Combat climate change

Composting helps produce renewable biomass energy and supports carbon sequestration (capturing atmospheric carbon in the soil), which reduces greenhouse gas emissions

Trusted by over 15,000 businesses

At Grundon, we know you want to boost recycling efforts while reducing your environmental footprint. To achieve this, proper recycling of compostable packaging is essential. Unfortunately, when compostables are mixed with general waste, the opportunity to reclaim precious resources is lost, leaving you disappointed in the missed potential to fully utilise your eco-friendly investments.

We believe that all compostable materials should be reclaimed and converted into valuable soil improvers. This process not only contributes to the generation of renewable biomass energy but also facilitates carbon sequestration, a method of capturing atmospheric carbon and storing it in the soil, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between biodegradable and compostable?

Biodegradable materials break down into nature via microorganisms, water, and air but may leave metal residues or become toxic microplastics without a set time frame.

Compostable materials decompose into natural elements within a specific period in composting environments, producing nutrient-rich soil without harmful residues.

Can contaminated packaging be sent for composting?

No, contaminated compostable packaging is not suitable for composting.

Anaerobic Digestion facilities, like Envar, filter out non-compostable plastics to protect the compost quality. Garden waste contaminated with any plastic is redirected to an Energy from Waste facility.

However, we can recycle compostable packaging with small amounts of food scraps as both are organic. For larger amounts of food waste, we suggest a separate food waste service to ensure efficient recycling of both your compostables and food waste.

What is composting?

Composting is the process where bacteria and fungi break down organic matter into a soil-like material, under specific, controlled conditions. It’s a sustainable means to recycle compostable, garden waste and food waste, allowing these to be turned into compost.

What container sizes are available?

Our external compostable packaging containers are sized at 240L, 660L, or 1100L and our internal ones are sized at 55L

What compostable products are accepted?

Our composting partner, Envar, will only process the following compostable products that conform to the criteria within BS EN 13432, BS EN 14995 and ASTM D6400 certifications. This information can be found on the specification sheet of your packaging.

Get in touch with us if you’re unsure about the suitability of any of your compostable items.
