Prepare for the 2025 Simpler Recycling mandate: A five-step guide for businesses

We’re just months away until the UK’s Simpler Recycling regulations will commence.

What is Simpler Recycling?

Simpler Recycling’ is the name given to a new set of regulations, introduced by the UK Government on 21 October 2023,  designed to dispel any confusion regarding recyclable and non-recyclable materials and provide consistency in recycling practices for homes, workplaces, and schools across England.

It will first affect businesses from 31 March 2025 onwards.

In practical terms, what does this new legislation mean?

It means that all businesses and other non-household premises with 10 or more full-time employees must have a collection for dry recyclable materials (plastic, paper and card, glass, metals) and must also separate food waste from general waste.

Micro-firms (businesses with fewer than 10 full-time employees) have until 31 March 2027 to have these collections in place.

Also, from 31 March 2027, recyclable plastic film packaging and plastic bags will need to be separated.

The countdown is on, but is your business ready?

How should businesses prepare for ‘Simpler Recycling’

1. Review current waste services

Evaluate your current waste collection setup to pinpoint areas that need updating.

2. Invest in an appropriate recycling set up

Consider new bins and signage to enhance recycling behaviour at your site. Though this may require upfront investment, it’s likely to reduce waste disposal costs and more importantly, ensure compliance over time.

3. Educate your employees

Even with proper bins in place, success relies on employees understanding and following the new rules. Make sure your team are aware of the Simpler Recycling requirements and gain their buy in by explaining the benefits of correctly segregating waste. So as a business you are all on board to comply.

4. Stay updated and use available resources

For resources and guidance on Simpler Recycling, businesses should refer to the official government website, as well as consult with relevant authorities and waste management providers.
