Grundon scores a winning double at International Environment Awards

Two Grundon customers have been recognised for their environmental successes at the prestigious 2024 International Green Apple Environment Awards.

Both London’s Television Centre (TVC) and Bournemouth’s Bh2 Leisure won plaudits for their waste management and recycling achievements after showing impressive rises in recycling rates and introducing a series of new waste management measures.

The Awards programme is part of a global campaign to identify and celebrate the greenest companies and the entries were selected from over 1,200 nominations worldwide. The awards ceremony took place on Monday 18 November, in a special ceremony in The Orangery, at Kensington Palace, London.

Presenting the awards was Helen Kitchen, from Yealands Wines of New Zealand, winners of The 2024 Green World Environment Awards.

First to take to the stage to collect their joint award were Lee Duddy, Property Manager at TVC, alongside Clara Mantuani, from Principle Cleaning Services, and James Luckett from Grundon.

The second Green Apple Award, which was also shared with Grundon, was presented to Bryan Taylor, Bh2 Centre Manager, together with James Luckett.

James, who works with both customers, said: “We were absolutely thrilled that the hard work of the TVC and Bh2 Leisure teams have been recognised. Waste management is such an important part of the sustainability agenda and, by focusing on education and communication with cleaning teams, tenants and other occupiers, we have been able to make a real difference in improving recycling statistics and introducing new waste streams.

“To see those results rewarded at such an important event on the environmental calendar was very gratifying and we were delighted to share the occasion with our customers.”

Television Centre

As the historic home of the BBC in White City, TVC is a modern building with office accommodation stretching across 9 floors, as well as ground floor restaurants, cafés and bars.

A delighted Lee, from Savills Property Management, said: “As part of our sustainability commitment, we are passionate about waste and recycling, so to have our efforts recognised with such a prestigious award is a real achievement.

“We work very hard with all our tenants and teams to promote waste education and Grundon has played an important role in helping us get to this point. This result shows just how much our efforts are paying off and we look forward to even greater success in the future.”

The independent judging panel of The Green Apple Awards commented: “At TVC, waste management has made significant strides, with recycling rates growing from 25% to nearly 60%. Key successes include education programmes for cleaning teams, enhanced communications, and waste audits.

“By 2023, recycling initiatives reduced waste services costs by over £9,000. Future plans focus on further reductions, language accessibility, and potential AI bin investments.”

Bh2 Leisure

Opened in 2017 and managed by Savills Property Management, Bh2 Leisure is home to more than a dozen restaurants and bars, a cinema and indoor leisure facilities, attracting around two million visitors a year.

Bryan echoed Lee’s sentiments when he added: “Sustainability is a year-round priority for us and, together with Grundon, we have worked hard to identify opportunities and implement solutions to reduce waste. Communication with our occupiers has been essential, we have worked hard to make sure the recycling message gets through to everyone and the results speak for themselves.

“We are delighted that our efforts have been recognised by The Green Apple awards and know this will be a huge incentive for our teams to continue striving towards even greater success.”

Speaking about Bh2 Leisure, the independent judging panel of The Green Apple Awards commented: “Since 2017, Bh2 Leisure in Bournemouth has improved waste management, achieving a 56.9% recycling rate in 2024. Their partnership with Grundon Waste Management saved 33,908 kg of CO2 emissions.”

Awards success

Together with Grundon, both winners now have the opportunity to further their success as a Green World Ambassador and to participate in the Green World Environment Awards, to be held in New Zealand in 2025.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Green Apple Environment Awards, which were launched in 1994 by The Green Organisation to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. The award programme has become well established as one of the most popular global environmental campaigns.
