Grundon celebrates 10th anniversary of operating a CarbonNeutral® fleet

This year, Grundon is celebrating 10 years of its CarbonNeutral® fleet certification programme.

Over the last decade, our commercial fleet, as well as company cars and vans, have travelled over 61 million miles, enabling us to offset the equivalent of over 115,000 tonnes of carbon and help make a real difference to communities around the world.

Applauding the programme, Neil Grundon, Chairman, said: “Whilst we recognise carbon offsetting is just one of the solutions to help combat climate change, we take immense pride in our decade-long commitment to making a positive impact through carbon neutrality since 2014.

“As the first of the major waste industry players to adopt the CarbonNeutral® fleet certification, we led the way in offsetting our carbon emissions and ensuring that waste collections did not add to our customers’ carbon footprint.

“In 2024, our commitment to decarbonising our fleet is stronger than ever. We are investing £6.5 million a year to expand our existing electric waste collection vehicle fleet and continue to focus on new technologies and alternative fuels for the future.”

But what exactly does CarbonNeutral® mean?

The CarbonNeutral® Protocol, overseen by Climate Impact Partners, spans over 600 projects across 56 countries, with a collective goal of achieving 1 billion tonnes of CO2 reductions. Attaining the CarbonNeutral® fleet certification involves offsetting emitted carbon by supporting projects worldwide that actively reduce emissions, such as renewable energy initiatives and forest conservation work.

Since 2014, our support for external emissions reduction projects has played an integral role in ecosystem restoration, improved air quality, poverty alleviation and community development.

As a result of our decade-long commitment to maintaining a certified CarbonNeutral® fleet, our purchase of carbon credits has contributed to tangible outcomes globally. These include:

Reflecting on our CarbonNeutral® journey, Toni Robinson, Risk & Sustainability Director, said: “As we celebrate our 10th year of operating a certified CarbonNeutral® fleet, we are proud to share the impact our contributions to these projects are making.

“The projects we support address the pressing global challenges at hand, providing vital support to communities in need. Through carbon credits, we’ve been able to make meaningful improvements in the quality of life for countless individuals and foster a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
